The Monastery of Geghard, Geghard

Listed as a World Heritage Site, The Monastery of Geghard allegedly shelters the spear--brought by apostle Judas Thaddaeus--which pierced Jesus during his crucifixion. Founded in the 4th century, the monastery complex was partially carved into a mountain, surrounded by towering cliffs and the Azat River gorge. Examine the elaborate structures with engraved khachkars--memorial stone stelas bearing a cross symbol. Enter the chapels, churches, and tombs located in the compound to observe the holy relics hidden amid rock-cut walls. Near the parking lot, vendors sell homemade sweet bread, dried fruit, treats, and souvenirs. • We visited the beautiful monastery as part of a tour of Armenia. The monastery is located up a ' dare ' valley. The monastery must rise in a sharp ascent. Built in the Middle Ages, it takes several monasteries, among them the rock-hewn monastery. The edge of the monastery is pointy and its exterior walls, decorated in a sharp manner while the inner walls are round, and have a conical dome, which sits on a drum-like structure. In a building that is not carved in the bedrock, a place where Christians light candles, and inside before the covered Parochet is a prayer that reads the Armenian priest, was a black cloak . The rock-hewn nail, the visitors (also us), fills the water that is considered to be the holy stone that stems from almost the floor and therefore must be lean to it.

  • One of the major touris spots in Armenia. A big religious complex carved inside the mountain. Quite impressive and well preserved. Listed as UNESCO Heritage site. A must see for sure :)
  • One of the most amazing churches in Armenia. It does get very busy sadly but you can always find a small hideaway place to pray and spend some alone time. A must for anyone visiting Armenia. The gorge itself is breathtaking views with a river that flows through and the caves all around the complex are amazing.
