Australian War Memorial pays tribute to Australians who fought in global conflicts. A large white building with a green dome serves as the site's focal point. It houses the commemorative area, including the Hall of Memory where the Tomb of the Australian Unknown Soldier lies. A great place to visit. The memorial outside is a sobering reminder of the cost of War. A touching tribute to those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. Inside is a comprehensive history of Australia's military, starting in the late 1800s right up to Afghanistan. There are some sound and light shows that bring some of the exhibits to life.
Visiting the war memorial was a really pleasant surprise to the point that I would say that it was the highlight of my trip to the nation's capital. Once I had taken the time to go around and appreciate the place I was really taken away by the sheer emotion the place holds. The museum inside was really great, would be great for everyone as it had in-depth detail and also a fun interactive side for younger people. Personal highlight would be the service before the closing of the memorial, would definitely recommend holding off your visit till later in the day to catch the service. Best thing going in Canberra.
