Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, Exmouth

Lighthouse · Tourist Spot
Watch the sun rise at Vlamingh Head Lighthouse--and then come back at dusk to watch it set. The lighthouse, built in 1912, stands as one of only a few places on the Australian coast where you can witness sunrise and sunset (not at the same time, of course). Even if you arrive at midday, you'll still have sweeping views of the Indian Ocean in three directions. If you visit between August and November, bring your binoculars for the chance to see migrating whales. If you arrive for sunset during any month, you'll likely see others taking in the spectacle with glasses of wine in their hands. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Exmouth holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • We followed everyone else who ventured up to view sunset, take in the 360 degree views and enjoy a champagne from the boot of our car. Great views all around. A must do when visiting!  more »
  • Perched high above the peninsula expect an amazing sunset if not too windy. Views across two points of ocean.  more »

  • Great spot to watch the sunset. Feel encouraged to stroll from the common parking spot to find a more secluded overlook. Lots of visitors may not expect the swarms of sandflies that attack at this time of day however. Take repellent (if you can find one that actually works...)
  • Great view over the western shore and the surrounding area. Awesome place to take in the view and take in a little bit of history whilst you are at it. There are still some of the original sandbags from WW2 which have not been moved.
