Karlskirche, dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo, is famous for its ellipsoid dome and two flanking columns of bas-reliefs. Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI commissioned this 18th-century Baroque church one year after the last great plague epidemic. See the reliefs and frescoes illustrating the scenes from the life of the great 16th-century reformer. The columns, similar to the Trajan Column in Rome, act as symbols of imperial power. They recall the two columns that stood in front of the Temple at Jerusalem and the Pillars of Hercules. The church is the final resting place of the composer Antonio Vivaldi. On the guide it was indicated the price for the elevator that leads into the dome. When we arrived in front of the Church, the main door was closed and one was obliged to go through a door on the side: there a crate and obligation to pay even to return simply in the Church... so we made a u-turn!!! very disappointed....
This is a beautiful place. We parked up on the side and took all our pictures thinking this place is amazing, only to find out that that was only the side! When we went round to the front we were amazed by the beautiful architecture and huge fountain. It made it look so beautiful. Would definitely recommend visiting this place.
This baroque church is a must visit. We went for the Mozart Requiem concert and had a very powerful musical experience. It was obvious even for me that the orchestra and choir were expert artists, the soprano singer had the most amazing voice that harmonized beautifully with the other singers. The great music, the acoustics and the ambience of the church, this was the highlight of our Vienna visit. April visit so the church was quite chilly, please wear warm clothes (thick blankets were provided).
