Votivkirche, Vienna

#12 of 106 in Historic Sites in Vienna
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Historic Site
Featuring two slim spires visible from a great distance, Votivkirche serves as one of Vienna's major Gothic landmarks, known for its stained-glass windows. Commissioned immediately after a failed assassination attempt on the life of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1853, the church was finally finished nearly two decades later. Consecrated on the silver anniversary of the emperor's marriage, the structure sits across from the site of the assassination attempt. The exterior features an intricate facade embellished with sculptures, while inside you can see an eye-catching altar decorated with glass mosaics and alabaster columns. • Amazing, amazing and unusual Gothic architecture in Vienna next to a park where people enjoy their beer and feel the Sigmund Freud vibes. A stunning architecture that betrays more and more detail upon each look. Quiet surroundings—almost feels like a getaway since it's outside the Ringstraße and all that.
  • Awesome Gothic church with stained windows, lovely architecture, and a quiet and green park in front of it. The entrance is completely free, no ticket needed. Inside there are a nice altar and an astonishing stone pulpit. It's definitely worth a visit.
