Trip Planner: Europe / Belgium / Flanders / West Flanders Province / Ieper (Ypres) / In Flanders Fields Museum
Delve into the history of World War I and the fighting that took place in Belgium at In Flanders Fields Museum. Named for the famous poem "In Flanders Fields" by Canadian soldier John McCrae, the museum aims to bring the human experience of war to the forefront. The museum is on the second floor of the Cloth Hall, a building that was fittingly destroyed during the war and has been reconstructed. When you arrive, you'll receive a poppy bracelet loaded with four personal stories to guide you through the museum and give a face to the war. Through these individual accounts of life during war, personal items such as diary passages and historical narrative, you'll have the opportunity to see the war as a human experience. Brilliant museum so much to see. My visit was marred as I have a dust allergy so I had to cut it short (not enough tissues) Otherwise this place would have got 5 stars. In the shop there are books in English too as well as other European books in the relevant languages. You can also keep the bracelet as a souvenir (not sure many people know that. Give the place a dusting once in a while please
Very informative. Clearly outlines WW1 from all perspectives as well as its immense horror. >100 years ago now, but lessons not to be forgotten. And, sadly it seems increasingly becoming more relevant again.
