Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro

#1 of 4,693 in Outdoors in Brazil
Lively Copacabana Beach features warm waters and a wide stretch of white sand, with numerous hotels, restaurants, bars, and night clubs dotting its promenade. You can swim, play sports, relax on the sand, enjoy freshly-caught fish delicacies, and soak up the atmosphere of one of Brazil’s most popular tourist destinations. The beach is policed and lit all through the night, so it’s always abuzz with hundreds of visitors, musicians, and food vendors. Take a leisurely sunset walk on the beach’s iconic walkway, and stay late to see locals singing, dancing, and playing footvolley right on the water’s edge. Remember to always swim where the locals do, and leave all your valuables at the hotel. • What makes Copacabana a very special place is its size and animation. The beach is very large both in length and depth. The sand is soft and clean as well as the water. In the evening it is transformed into an open-air gym, where there are many activities: football, volleyball, jogging, fitness ... My son was able to play football with a group of young people a real nice experience !!! There are many bar restaurants along the promenade where you can drink good Caipirinha for 10 reals and nibble while listening to music and admiring the entertainment.

  • I hate to rate a beach so low as the rating reflects only on a negative experience I had. 1 man tried to distract my friend whilst another leaned over from behind me and tried to grab my phone, I didn't let go and got dragged from the bench. Police were maybe 200m away. Don't take any valuables, keep tour phone hidden and your wits about you. Hopefully Rio are trying to combat this issue.
  • Copacabana beach is everything you'd expect it to be...a 4 kilometre beach stretch absolutely bustling with everything from vacationers to locals out to have a good time to beach hawkers selling everything from bikinis to local artefacts. The water is clean and the tide (at least in December) is mild enough to swim in. Loved it.
