Angkor Thom, Siem Reap

4.8
Angkor Thom features the epic remains of the last "great city" of the Khmer Empire. Founded in the 12th century by King Jayavarman VII, the city was a true administrative, military, and religious center of the kingdom. The wooden structures have long collapsed, but the stone walls, five gates, and terraces adorned with elaborate carvings still remain, with some portions completely restored--such as the popular south gate. To approach this gate you need to walk through a moat between two rows of statues holding the seven-headed Naga (giant serpent)--symbolizing the passage from the world of people to the world of goods. A Buddhist temple sited at the center inside the walls represents the connection between heaven and earth. Do not miss the terrace decorated with elephant carvings where royal parties took place. Put Angkor Thom into our Siem Reap trip planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • What to say... One of the most beautiful temples, beautiful, impressive. With my spouse we did it twice in one week. Not many people at this time (June) it was great.

  • Amazing Khmer culture! It may be interesting to read a bit of Khmer Culture History before visiting the temples, especially on the city of Angkor, which allows you to soak up the sites visited. To go from one site to another I recommend taking a Tuktuk, about $20 for 4 for a day to visit several temples, this is the cheapest.

  • An awesome temple that is usually the second stop on the one day tour of the temples. This location has tons of monkeys roaming about, but is also one of the busiest temples you'll find. Because it does not require a lot of climbing, this place will be packed with tour groups. Some tourists have better manners than others and there can be jockeying for photo ops. You might want to do a lap of the complex before setting out to take pictures. Having the light hitting the faces helps their intricate design stand out. You will be able to find plenty of faces in good quality conditions all around.
  • Nice temple next to a great trail. I suggest going around the smaller temples. From the trail you can see large trees, monkeys, birds and insects. I suggest bringing water and spending some time here.
