A World Heritage Site and the largest religious monument in the world, Angkor Wat contains some of the greatest masterpieces of Khmer art and architecture in existence. Khmer emperor Suryavarman II had the temple built in the early 12th century, originally dedicating it to the Hindu god Vishnu. By the end of the century, the temple transformed into a Buddhist religious site, which it remains today. Tour the 162.6 hectare (402 acre) complex to see its fantastically detailed and well preserved stone temples. Wear clothes that cover your upper arms and legs down to the knees to adhere to the temple's visitor dress code. A visit to Angkor Wat represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Siem Reap online route maker to plot your vacation.

what an amazing place! the grandeur of this complex leaves us astounded. one perceives the greatness that has been. with words it is not possible to explain the emotion experienced the first time you cross the threshold of the entrance door to the temple gardens ... anyone should see it once in a lifetime! magnificent! make the effort to see it at sunrise!

This is the reason people come to Cambodia. This is a massive temple complex that reflects different ages of rule and religious belief in Cambodia's history. The views are breathtaking and there are so many different places to explore. Make sure you stay at least 2 days to fully explore the area. I suggest going with a group that will show you around this massive area, ideally one that isn't too rushed to get you through everything. It's much easier to navigate with a guide. If you're really keen, wake up before sunrise and get here to take an iconic picture of this first temple as the sun rises and it reflects perfectly in the pond in front of it. Lastly, be sure to dress respectfully when you're here, and stay hydrated.
