Princess of Wales Theatre, Toronto

4.5
#1 of 193 in Nightlife in Toronto
The Princess of Wales Theatre is a 2000-seat theatre located at 300 King Street West in the heart of Toronto's Entertainment District in the downtown area. The theatre's name has a triple meaning: it recalls the Princess Theatre, Toronto's first "first-class legitimate" playhouse, that once stood three blocks to the east; it honours Diana, Princess of Wales, with whose consent the theatre was so-named; and it links the building to its sister theatre, the Royal Alexandra, one block to the east, also named - with Royal assent - for a former Princess of Wales.

  • Along with the Royal Alexandra, this is another fine theatre in Downtown Toronto. We saw The Last Ship (with Sting in the lead role). Even if you are not a major Sting fan, you will be impressed by his singing, stage presence, acting ability and the score and lyrics which were composed by him. The stage design was incredible, stunningly realistic in its depiction of the shipyard and its surroundings. It strongly enhances the impact of the high drama of this heart-warming musical that also features some truly marvellous vocal displays from the lead actors/actresses. The story, based on events in the mid 1980s in the UK, does not attempt to address the many global factors that are at play in today's multidimensional societies but the plight and perennial struggle of blue collar workers in declining industries are still very relevant. Highly recommended.
  • The theatre is beautiful! We saw phantom of the opera which was absolutely mesmerizing. The acting, signing, dancing and costumes were exceptional. The props were beautiful and impressive. Will be back to see wicked!
