Prague Castle, Prague

Looming above the left bank of the Vltava River, Prague Castle claims status as the largest castle complex in the world. Dating back to the ninth century, the imposing structure occupies nearly 70,000 sq m (753,000 sq ft), its grounds so big they include four churches and four palaces, as well as five different gardens. Once the seat of power for kings of Bohemia and Holy Roman emperors, the castle now serves as the official residence of the country's president. The structure has undergone four major reconstructions since the 12th century, and its blend of architectural styles earned it a spot on the World Heritage List. • When we plan to visit a castle we always get the idea of elegant halls full of luxurious furniture and ostentatious tools, but in this case you will not find any of this. It's one of the few things I'm disappointed in in Prague. The tour of the castle becomes a boring walk in corridors and restricted paths without any beauty other than to imagine what those salons would look like in their times of glory. The service staff is not at all friendly when it comes to explaining any doubts or guidance, almost all of them are older people who were apparently local workers in the time of communism and were marked by that stage, pitifully so. If I went back to Prague, I'd definitely skip this place.

  • Nice place to visit if tou are touring at Prague. Just can be a little difficult if you get lost from a guided visit...not many speak english so communication/help turns hard.  more »

  • Came here early one day with my partner. We saw that castle a day before we went in and the line to get through security is... insane. Like it's literally not worth it. So we decided to arrive around 8am the next day so we we didn't need to fight the crowds. Best decision ever. There was hardly anyone there and we got to really enjoy and appreciate the area. We didn't buy any tickets to go inside because they were too expensive for us. But we still got to enjoy and view the beautiful buildings. The only downside is the lack of signage. We didn't know for the longest time where we were walking. I can understand why they don't want to put ugly signs around but it can be difficult to navigate at first. I would highly recommend only visiting before 9am or after 7pm.
  • Lovely castle. A must see. I would recommend the tour about how it was built. In the tour they show progress models; like first the walls, then the church. My favorite part was with the soldier burial. Dude must have been a real noble and we'll respected warrior
