Trip Planner: Europe / Denmark / Zealand / South Zealand / Stevns Municipality / Store Heddinge / Stevns Klint
Stevns Klint is a white chalk cliff located some 6km southeast of Store Heddinge on the Danish island of Zealand. Stretching 17km along the coast, it is of geological importance as one of the best exposed Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) boundaries in the world. Subject to frequent erosion, the cliff rises to a height of up to 40m.A visit to Stevns Klint represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Store Heddinge tour itinerary planner to plot your vacation.
The cliff reveals sections from the uppermost part of the Maastrichtian stage (72 to 66 million years ago) and from the lowermost part of the Danian stage (66 to 62 million years ago). A black layer of fish clay, a few centimeters thick, containing iridium clearly marks the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary. The layers can also be seen deep in the tunnels of Stevnsfortet, a cold-war fortress constructed in 1953. The bryozoa chalk in the cliff is highly shock resistant to both conventional and nuclear weapons.
In 2008 Cold War Museum Stevns Fortress opened to the public. It features a large exhibition of military equipment and a 1.5-hour guided tour in the large underground system of the fortress. The underground system of the fortress features of tunnels, living quarters and command centers, including a hospital and even a chapel. There are also two ammunition depots for its two cannons. The tunnels are 18– below the surface, dug deep into the chalk of Stevns. The top secret fortress was built in 1953 and remained operational until 2000.
Stevns Klint Reviews
Jämfört med Möns klint blir upplevelsen helt annorlunda på så sätt att detta inte är ett ställe där du kommer att känna att du måste avverka någon större sträcka till fots för att uppleva stället, så ... more »Compared to Möns Klint, the experience is quite different in that this is not a place where you will feel that you have to fell a large stretch on foot to experience the place, so the klintes complement each other well in that way. It's really nice here too and it's all nice to go down to the beach, scribble a bit with the big limestones, fold on the beach full of round beautiful rocks and enjoy. But if you have fellow travellers who cannot get around down there among large and small rocks, they can probably wait up there and feel that they also got out of the place.
Super balade avec une super vue sur la mer et la Suède au loin depuis le haut de la falaise. Depuis la plage, vous pouvez observer la falaise de craie. La Barrie basale correspond aux sédiments Crétac... more »Great ride with a great view of the sea and Sweden in the distance from the top of the cliff. From the beach you can observe the chalk cliff. The basal Barrie corresponds to the Cretaceous sediments (from the time of the dinosaurs, with the more or less horizontal strata) and the upper part (oblique strata) to the sediments of the tertiary era. The grey zone between the two corresponds to ash deposits linked to intense volcanic activity during the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. It's not every day we see that.
Just love this outdoor destination - tranquil, picturesque, and a UNESCO site too. Take time to listen to the sound of the pebble clatter with the outgoing waves. Wear good gumboots and weather appropriate active wear for a comfortable visit. Unlike my last visit, best visit during morning to midday for full sunlight on east facing cliffs - enjoy!!!
Unesco heritage site for a reason. Great location for a day out when visiting Copenhagen or the area in general. There is plenty of different activities, like walks in the area and picnic areas near the cliff. But be careful not to step too close to the steep limestone cliffs. Go down and have a look at the cliff from below or talk a "grand-canyon" like walk along the entire cliffside along a more than 5 km long route.
