Fundacion Iglesia de la Compania, Quito

4.6
Quito's famous Baroque church, Fundacion Iglesia de la Compania dazzles visitors with its golden interior. Dripping with extravagance, the church is adorned head to toe in gold leaf decorations, perhaps explaining why it took 160 years to build. Equally impressive-- though not nearly as golden--the church's symmetrical facade gives visitors a taste of what's to come inside. Have a look at the indigenous Ecuadorian faces depicted subtly on the pillars. • A guide service is offered at no additional cost. We recommend that you accept, makes a big difference in the visitation, which is excellent. A pretty preserved heritage

  • The church of La Compañía de Jesús was for me the best, the most beautiful of the colonial churches I could visit in Quito and Ecuador. Unlike other churches, it is only "open" to the public during Sunday Mass; otherwise, any other day you have to pay 5 USD to be able to enter; a somewhat high number in Ecuadorian standards, but it's worth it. The cost of the visit includes the explanation of a guide that accompanies you during the tour. No matter if you go alone or in a group, they offer you the guide service. While the explanations given by young guides often fail to recite from memory what they learned, somewhat automatically, it is useful information to help understand the construction techniques used, as well as the history of the church and the order Jesuit. The guided tour takes about 40 minutes, and finished this one you can stay longer if you like, to be able to appreciate with calm some detail that has caught your attention. Believe me, details to see and appreciate there are many; the church is a true baroque gem, covered with decorations everywhere: walls, columns, the ceiling, the altar, the chapels,... it is certainly a church with an impressive interior, one of the most beautiful in Latin America. You can spend more than two hours contemplating the gold-covered details, a symbol of the richness of the colonial Quito. Not only the gold of the walls and ceilings is to be admired, but the works of art, especially the mural showing the punishments of hell according to the type of sinner (entering on the right hand side). Photos are prohibited within the church; the facade can be seen and photographed without problems when walking through the historic center of Quito.
