The largest calcite statue ever discovered, The Sphinx of Memphis beckons visitors with outstretched paws. Discovered in 1912, the sphinx was carved out of a yellowish calcite monolith in honor of an unknown pharaoh between 1700 BCE and 1400 BCE. Weighing an estimated 90 tons, the monument is 8 m (26 ft) long and 4 m (13 ft) wide, and its facial features resemble three pharaohs. Memphis makes such a beautiful Sphinx and I enjoyed walking around the open air museum here to see other artefacts collected from the area. The massive statue of Ramses II is an interesting archaeological find with a fascinating story of recovering the massive stone likeness. There are a number of souvenir stands at Memphis as well if you are interest to pick up a tapestry, small sculpture, or scarf.

May not be as much to physically see at this site, BUT what has happened here is amazing. The story of Joseph and of Moses... just to be where it is in fact known that they were actually in this place is awe inspiring. Oh, and in the land where cats were considered sacred, a momma dog with adorable puppies was just too much to resist.
