Fort Qaitbey, Alexandria

An impressive example of medieval military architecture, Fort Qaitbey overlooks the city's harbor. Built in the 1480s, the fortress was designed to provide protection from crusaders arriving by sea--today it offers extensive views of the Mediterranean and the city it was built to defend. The fort allegedly stands on the site of the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the now-gone Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
