Pompey's Pillar, Alexandria

Marvel at the skill of ancient stonemasons at Pompey's Pillar, one of the largest monolith columns ever erected. Constructed in honor of the Emperor Diocletian in 297, this 26 m (88 ft) tall granite column is the largest Roman triumphal arch built outside Roman imperial cities, the tallest free-standing column not composed of drums. Commemorating a victory over a revolt in Alexandria, the Corinthian capped pillar is made of red granite from Aswan on a 20.5 m (67 ft) wide shaft having a diameter of 2.71 m (8.9 ft) at the base. With an estimated 285 tones, this is one of the largest ancient monuments. Explore statues of sphinx around the monument. • I enjoyed visiting this excursion. Be prepared to walk and steps and stairs. It’s a must see if visiting Alexandria. Not major but nice sight to see.  more »
  • Huge red granite column of the Asuan with more than 30 meters of height built in what remains of the Temple of Serapeum, which according to legend was built to perennialize the assassination of the Roman general Pompey, but that in archaeological excavations carried out at its base , inscriptions were found confirming that it was built in 291 AD. as part of a work by Emperor Diocletian. You enter for a very comfortable entrance, but in general the environment and the archaeological remains are very neglected, its environments are quite old and you can see a lack of order and more it looks like a debris area than a tourist site. At the foot of the pillar there are Heliopolis sphincts and a Nilometer, an ancient structure used to measure and record the level of the Nile River at the time of the pharaohs.

  • Pompeys pillar is good to watch if you are visiting the Alexandria. Your guide will explain the stories related to it. It's very well preserved in the ruins. Moving up to it involves little ruined steps up from front otherwise there is a long way to reach at top too.
  • Impressive and massive granite column. You can imagine how this site will look in his good days. Flanked by 2 beautiful Sphinxes. Must visit
