Imagine the tragedy of desert warfare and pay tribute to the dead at El Alamein War Cemetery, a Commonwealth cemetery built near the site of the famous World War II tank battle. Designed by a British architect and unveiled in 1954, the memorial commemorates 11,866 Commonwealth forces members who perished during war. Most of them died in the Western Desert Campaign and in Syria, and have no marked graves. The cemetery particularly focuses on those who died during the Battle of El Alamein. Climb the central stairway leading to a tall elevated stone cross and a terrace for an overview of the area. • really interesting to see leaves you breathless! There are thousands of graves, you can read the dates of birth, all dead young boys x a stupid battle. I recommend visiting it

  • It is worth a visit to commemorate so many young soldiers who lost their lives in this war, with many sacrifices, both for the great heat and lack of adequate support, also in extremely difficult conditions.

  • As always, Commonwealth War Graves sites are meticulous, but hauntingly beautiful places. Through the inscriptions of loved ones on the headstones, the dead reach out and challenging us to reconcile the pain of loss, with the joy of living, and to embrace our lives, and those that we love, in such a way that was denied them. Take the time to read a random few, and reflect on the anguish of the author, sometimes expressed in stark simplicity, sometimes in most eloquent poetry, sometimes through words laden with sadness and pain, sometimes through words celebrating the life that was. Take pause at the grave of an unknown soldier, no less a mother's lost son, a child's lost father, loved and remembered. The world that they paid for is slow to arrive, but each tear shed in rememberance diminishes the gap. Lest we forget.
  • A beautifully maintained cemetery that is also a moving reminder of the reality of war.
