Trip Planner: Europe / France / Centre-Val de Loire / Loir-et-Cher / Blois / Maison de la Magie Robert-Houdin
Maison de la Magie Robert-Houdin will try to fool you with trickery, hocus-pocus, and magic, but you'll never be fooled by machines, installations, pictures, and music. Amusing museum installations pair science with superstition to test your ability to recognize reality, while feats of balance and skill honors jugglers of the Middle Ages in the Greek temple room. You may be surprised to recognize notable figures in magic's history including the 18th century physicist and magician, Joseph Pinetti Willedall de Merci, and genius inventor, Buatier De Kolta.
It's not your eyesight and you're not losing your mind-- there really is a life-sized "hallucinoscope" there. Depicting the literary worlds of Jules Verne, you'll swear your eyes are deceiving you as you navigate "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." Your children will love the chessboard of optical illusions, the optics and electricity used to conjure magical craft, and the mysterious clock. We thought this might be a little different so we gave it a go. Although it is over 4 floors, there is not much there by way of exhibits; and there is very very little by way of English... more »
I loved this charming place and I think the price for a family of four was a bargain these days. We went on a day when it was raining so it was pretty busy but it never felt crowded. The show was really good, aimed more towards the children as you'd expect. Really nicely presented exhibitions on the history of magic, horology and Harry Houdini. It is all in French but hey, we're in France! My wife speaks schoolgirl French and I used Google translate in camera mode now and again and it was fine. The dragons are brilliant. Totally mad.
Great place for kids and adults. We were lucky enough to see ‘Dragon time’ when mechanical dragons’ heads appeared out of the windows and roared at the people in the square. The show was fun and there was plenty to see and do in the museum itself. The only downside was the stench coming from the downstairs toilets which was truly awful
