Trip Planner: Europe / France / Normandy / Basse-Normandie / Calvados / Colleville-sur-Mer / Normandy American Cemetery
Normandy American Cemetery honors American soldiers who died in Europe during World War II. Most of the 9,387 graves contain the remains of American soldiers and military personnel who lost their lives during the D-Day landings and the operations that followed. East of the memorial, the semicircle garden has 1,557 names inscribed on the "Walls of the Missing,” with rosettes denoting the names of those who have since been identified. The semicircular colonnade has one loggia at each end containing narratives of military operations as well as huge maps. See the iconic bronze statue called the “Spirit of American Youth” in its center and, overlooking the beach, a tablet depicting the Normandy landings. Normandy American Cemetery Reviews
Well-maintained grounds. Beautiful setting. We happened to be there when an orchestra was doing songs from the era. more »
La zona en la que está, sobre la playa de Omaha, es de gran belleza como lo es el propio cementerio. Desgraciadamente, la belleza pasa a un segundo plano al imaginar a los miles de soldados, casi todo... more »The area in which it is, on the beach of Omaha, is of great beauty as is the cemetery itself. Unfortunately, beauty moves into the background as you imagine the thousands of soldiers, almost all young men, who rest under the crosses (and stars of David). Thousands of lives truncated by the unreason of war. He plunged us into grim thoughts.
This is a very sombre and sobering place but is an absolute must-visit. The feeling as you stand and gaze at the sheer number of graves (9,388) in the cemetery is almost overwhelming and is certainly very emotional. The whole site is immaculately kept and is simply beautiful. There are lots of walking tours and a lot of people visiting so it can be quite noisy - bear this in mind for your visit, as it is not a place for silent reflection. It really brings home that these were important individuals with lives, families and journeys - these lives are true cost of war, a message more relevant than ever.
Strong place. Everyone should visit. And do his best to avoid repeating what happened here. So many lives... Guys, we will never forget!
