Chateau-Musee, Dieppe

3.9
Chateau-Musee survived the 1694 bombardment and is now a museum and exhibition space with a strong maritime collection. From here, you can get a panoramic view over the town and the coast. The castle is composed of a quadrangular enclosure with round flanking towers and a lower court adjacent. Its interior courtyard is picturesque. Inside, admire a rich collection of 17th- and 18th-century ivory carvings, including the lacy folding fans for which Dieppe was known. The castle was founded in 1188 and destroyed in 1195. Restored in the 14th century, the castle was later in large part reconstructed by Charles des Marets. Make Chateau-Musee a part of your Dieppe vacation plans using our Dieppe holiday website.

  • A great looking building stood in a prominent position over the town and beach. You would expect there to be a tour of the building to see the historic structure, but no, there is a small museum inside all described in French, which is the same for most of the lessor historic sites here in Normandy. The museum would have been a little more interesting if we could understand the described pieces on display, though it was only €4.50 each for entry and those under 25 years old are free. There are stuffed birds, pictures of fish and lots of carved whale bone (scrimshaw) and ivory, very fine works. I would have liked to see the inside and history of the citidel itself, there is a lot there to see, if it were only allowed to be on show. This could be a great attraction if done better 😬
  • It’s a long steep hill to get to the castle, but great views out over the sea and Dieppe make it worthwhile. Unfortunately we arrived too late to go in to the castle, but we were still able to get inside the walls and in to the outer bailey area. We parked close by in a seafront car park and made the most of the various ice cream and food stalls before heading in to Dieppe itself. All in all, a decent place to visit.
