Maisy Battery, Grandcamp-Maisy

#14 of 97 in Historic Sites in Calvados
Battlefield · Hidden Gem · Educational Site
When the Allies landed at Omaha Beach to liberate France from the Nazis, they had to penetrate Maisy Battery, which housed well-armed German soldiers defending their territory. American Army Rangers took the battery, but at great cost. After the war, the Allies buried the camp and all it contained, virtually intact, for more than 60 years. Today, it's a museum that illustrates the sacrifices both sides made during the war. You can tour the bunker and its tunnels to get a hands-on appreciation for the spot's historical significance and the role it played in the liberation of France. Maisy Battery is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , online itinerary creator Edition.

  • Very informative to see the batteries restored as they should be back in WOII. Definitely worth the visit. You are able to walk trough the trenches and get a little bit an idea of how that must have.....  more »
  • This Battery has only recently been discovered about 20 years ago..good History as to why Bloody Omaha was so.. Buried to History before the War ended, because of the damage it caused the Allies. Wikipedia is a good starting point for it's History prior to a visit, And if the weather has been wet, some Boots or a change of clothing & shoes as it is the original trenches between buildings & expect 2/2 half hours to view everything. parking is on site [ grass ] as of 2019. Has a small shop of paraphernalia of WW2
  • A rarity. Actually get to go in the trenches and see the mess rooms, ammo stores etc. Amazing! Way better than any museum. It wont last the test of time though as no effort being made to preserve. Go see it while you can
