Avenue Montaigne, Paris

#33 of 421 in Shopping in Paris
This historic site, Avenue Montaigne, was originally called the Widows’ Alley in the 18th century because women in mourning gathered there, but the street has changed much since those days. The current name comes from Michel de Montaigne, a writer of the French Renaissance. When you wander this street today, you will find a treasure trove of famous fashion stores, including Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, Fendi, Valentino, and Ralph Lauren as well as jewelers like Bulgari and other upscale establishments such as the Plaza Athénée hotel.

The Canadian Embassy is also located here, and actress Marlene Dietrich once owned an apartment on this street for many years and died there in 1992. Make Avenue Montaigne part of your personalized Paris itinerary using our Paris trip planner.
