Chapelle Expiatoire, Paris

4.0
Located in the eighth arrondissement of Paris, Chapelle Expiatoire is a chapel dedicated to Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette. When you visit this site, keep an eye out for the arched arcades within the chapel hall, which commemorate the Swiss Guards massacred at Tuileries Palace on August 10, 1792 whilst defending the Royal family.

Cypress trees once surrounded the chapel but were cut down in 1862, and a public garden was created instead. When you visit today, this historic building and its garden remain a peaceful, haunted place in the otherwise energetic center of Paris.

This historic site is also located at the former graveyard of 3,000 victims of the French Revolution. Make Chapelle Expiatoire part of your personalized Paris itinerary using our Paris trip maker.

  • Very interesting little visit. It's fairly short as the only remaining artefact are the supposed tombs of louis xvi and Marie Antoinette. There is also the testament from louis xvi and a letter that Marie Antoinette wrote to her sister before their deaths. Shockingly none of both seem to understand the reason for their deaths.
  • 6 Euro for essentially nothing. Very small, nothing of substance and architecture and gardens were underwhelming.
