Hotel de Ville, Paris

4.4
Hotel de Ville houses Paris's city government, and is one of the loveliest buildings in town. For a good view from outside, go to the top floor of the Bazar de l'Hôtel de Ville (BHV) department store opposite, and walk up a flight of stairs to the roof terrace. The present structure replaced the 16th-century original, which burned down in 1871. An enlarged pastiche of its predecessor, the new building was built by the architects Ballu and Deperthes and was mostly completed by 1882. The building is lavishly decorated both inside and out, and finished in an arresting white stone, similar to that used for the Sacre-Coeur basilica. When Paris was liberated from the Germans in 1944, General de Gaulle greeted the crowds from a front window of the building. Robespierre was shot in the jaw and arrested in the original building in 1794. Use our Paris route planner to arrange your visit to Hotel de Ville and other attractions in Paris.

  • During his extreme Parisian walk could not fail to look at the square Hotel de Ville, the former Greevskaya Square, formerly known as a place for medieval entertainment with the cutting of heads to those who had it superfluous, according to the royal judges, and as a place for The same procedures, but with the use of guillotine (it was on the Grevskaya Square in April 1792 was installed the first guillotine)-to shorten the head length of "enemies of the people" and other opponents of revolutionary transformations, came with purely peaceful purposes- To look at the exhibition of French cheese-makers, to taste cheeses and to appreciate especially liked, for the purpose of their purchase... • It's city hall, not a hotel per se. Quite a nice old building on the east bank of seine. There is a merry go round at one corner of the plaza in front. Well lighted at night and look even nicer.
  • The Hotel de Ville is one of the enduring landmarks in the city and it's been that way since the mayor of Paris first moved to the site in 1357. Initially, the seat of Paris city government was in the house owned by whoever was mayor. It wasn't until 1533 that the French king Francis I decided to grace the city with an Hotel de Ville that suited the capital of France! Instagram @profnasr
