Pont des Arts, Paris

4.0
#95 of 2,938 in Things to do in Paris
A pedestrian bridge, Pont des Arts crosses the Seine River, linking the Institut de France and the central square of the Palais du Louvre. Many lovebirds come here to lock padlocks to the railing or grating on the side of the bridge. They then throw the key into the Seine as a romantic gesture, representing the couple's commitment. Note that the French police patrol the bridge to stop people from throwing keys into the river. Use our Paris trip maker tool to arrange your visit to Pont des Arts and other attractions in Paris.

  • The Bridge of Arts in Paris was built on Napoleon's orders in 1804 and restored in the 1980s after damage sustained during the two world wars. It is pedestrianized and connects the Institute of France and the square courtyard of the Louvre Palace, which was called the "Palace of the Arts" during the First Empire. The Bridge of Arts in Paris, too, is considered the main bridge of lovers, where thousands of couples from all over the world lock their love on the castle, which is attached to the fence, and the key is thrown into the Seine. The bridge is often used by artists and photographers as an open-air studio thanks to the picturesque views from the bridge; they put their works on display here. But, for the most part, the bridge has another mission - thousands of fans from all over the world every year visit the Bridge of Arts in Paris to sell...

  • When I went to the Louvre from the left bank, I used it because it was the nearest bridge from the hotel I stayed. There is the warmth of the tree in the appearance, and it is a wonderful bridge. It was hard to walk because there was a gap of the board.

  • A bridge you might cross when you walk from the northern part of Paris to the Eiffel Tower or the other way around. It's a nice photo spot, also the buildings around. There are often musicians to give you a very Parisian feeling while you cross the bridge!
  • Pont des Arts is one several interesting bridges that cross the Seine, connecting the Left and Right Banks. Historically, the first metal bridge in Paris was built here between 1802-04, that bridge was closed for usage in 1977 and then collapsed in 1979. The present Pont des Arts was built in 1984 as a steel reconstruction of the original. In recent years the bridge was noted for the incredible number of padlocks that were attached to it. These were removed back in 2015 I believe due to the incredible amount of weight and strain that had been added to the bridge. Now it is a clean and simple bridge again.
