Villa Savoye, Poissy

4.2
#1 of 7 in Things to do in Poissy
Designed by famed Swiss architects Le Corbusier and his cousin, Pierre Jeanneret, Villa Savoye represents a modern architectural masterpiece open to the public. The Savoye family commissioned the house as a country retreat in 1928, and it was finished in the early 1930s. The home became Corbusier's best-known building from the era, as it exerted an enormous influence on the international modernism architectural movement through its design. During World War II, Nazis sent the family to a concentration camp and used the house for storage. After the war, the French government took ownership; it was designated a historical monument in 1965. Plan a Poissy trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • Though I might be biased as an architect student, I recommend everyone with an interest for the modern period to visit le Corbusiers most famous building. Though it is both overrated and underrated...  more »
  • The site is an open space surrounded by mature trees with the Villa in the center. You approach down a path through the trees facing the Villa which for me was an perfect introduction to the house...  more »

  • Short guide in English or there is an audio if you want more detail. Amazing to see the new way of thinking about architecture, especially when you see the videos of what life and style was like outside of the house. To build a structure that still looks so boldly modern, at the time it was constructed, is extremely impressive and definitely worth visiting.
  • Well, It was my personal pilgrimage to the roots of the modern architecture. Villa Savoy should be a obligatory place for most of the architects and architectural students. Building, its placement and form is just incredible up to date, despite its age (91 years). It was really personal experience. I would recommend that you plan your trip right after opening, so you'll have some quality time with this incredible piece of architecture. Through this building Le Corbusier is still alive. That you can be 100% sure.
