The Royal Chapel, Versailles

The Royal Chapel contains a royal gallery dedicated to St. Louis. It was finished in 1707 by Robert de Cotte. The intricate detailing of the chapel's ceiling contains paintings by the artists Jouvet, Coypel, and La Fosse. Van Cleve sculpted the front altar out of marble, decorated in front with gilded bronze.   • but we were not able to gain access to the chapel on our visit. it was still quite impressive but we would have really liked to have seen it up close.  more »

  • Royal chapel with magnificent vaulted ceilings. Evolved with the palace. Fifth chapel of the palace, important for royal events like marriages etc. Integral part if the Royal life.
  • It is off limits to normal visitors and can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Normal visitors can only view it through a small door in one of the rooms on the upper floor. As expected, the entrance gets pretty crowded but it is worthwhile to wait for your turn and take a few photos. Unfortunately only the upper floor and the ceiling of the chapel can be viewed from here.
