Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site, Dachau

#1 of 11 in Things to do in Dachau
A moving reminder of a dark time in Europe's history, Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site was the first of the Nazi concentration camps opened in Germany. Set on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory near the medieval town of Dachau, the camp was intended to hold only political prisoners. However, it eventually detained Jews, ordinary German and Austrian criminals, and foreign nationals from countries occupied or invaded by Germany. Today, the camp serves as a memorial to the many prisoners who suffered and lost their lives here between 1933 and 1945. The displays guide you over the path that would have been taken by new prisoners, leading straight through the main entry gate. The memorial includes the camp prison and the maintenance buildings, which once housed kitchens, workshops, and baths. They now serve as a museum. You can book guided tours in advance. • Guide was knowledgeable and thorough in her explanations and information sharing. Very willing to share and answer questions. Excellent experience in history, making one realize how quickly power in the wrong hands can get out of control. Not a place to bring children as many exhibits are realistically graphic, frightening to see the destructiveness of humans on other humans. Appreciate the book store right in the camp where the proceeds go to the survivor memorial fund. Tour is about 2.5 hours. But if you go on the first tour of the day. (Right at the Dachau site-NOT a separate tour bus) you will have time after the tour to go back to the exhibits in the main building. You can get to the Dachau site by public transportation. This is considerably cheaper and a better tour.
  • A place to visit, even if you don't care about history. There is just so much culture in places like these that you can almost feel the past, a past that everyone should know about. In winter, when the sun is going down, this place becomes outstandingly immersive. An unmissable experience.
