Eiserner Steg, Frankfurt

4.4
Built in 1867 to support horse and carriage traffic over the River Main to the train station, Eiserner Steg offers stunning views of Frankfurt's skyline and most historic buildings. Cars are not allowed on the bridge, making it an ideal place for a romantic walk or a pensive stroll. Along the railings and bridge structure, you'll find hundreds of padlocks placed here by couples as a symbol of their unending love. The bridge connects the city's historic quarter with the Sachsenhausen district, where plentiful museums and pubs serve typical German cider. • It is a wrought iron bridge crossing the river Main connects the city center of Frankfurt to the District of Sachsenhausen. Currently it is the place where Lovers Exchange eternal love, leaving evidence of their love of locks closed attached to bridge, as happens in other places (SWING BRIDGE at Taranto and PENELOPE in Senigallia). Beautiful. Place not to be missed if you go to Frankfurt. TO VISIT!

  • This bridge is definitely unique with all its padlocks, which form an interesting view running down the whole length of the bridge - and somehow go well with the bridge's heavy iron look! Other than that, the views are quite nice in both directions, making it a popular photo spot, with the various buildings of Frankfurt in the background, and the boats on the water below. The bridge can be quite crowded at peak tourist times, with lots of people trying to get a good photo. But it is apparently emptier and the view is pretty in the early morning hours. You can see the other bridges crossing the Main river in the distance as well.
  • It was an okay destination. But the sidewalks of the lake are great. We enjoyed sitting there for a long time in the evening with the view of the buildings lit. There are few good river cruises also at reasonable prices, if you want to see the view further for half an hour or so.
