Kerameikos Cemetery, Athens

4.0
Walk along the graves of ancient Athens' most prominent citizens at Kerameikos Cemetery. Apart from the cemetery, this archeological site, which was rediscovered in 1861, features the remains of the city walls dating back to the 5th century BCE, and two famous city gates. Notice the nearby platform from which Pericles gave his historic speech after the Peloponnesian Wars. Visit the small onsite museum with a vast collection of funerary sculptures, steles, and terracotta figurines. • Beautiful place, you can see such ancient graves and the old wall that would have surrounded Athens. Seems it's seldom visited by most tourists so I'd definitely recommend. Cold drinks machine selling 500ml water for 50¢ is a great help at the entrance. Small museum inside included in ticket cost, would recommend if you are interested in ancient masonry and pottery etc.
  • As all other historical sites in Athens, this one is also very well prepared for tourists. I liked it here. It's quiet, and taken good care of. It was very interesting to visit. Plenty of informational tables. It was included in the ticket that we bought for multiple historical sites and it was definitely worth spending the money on it.
