Panathenaic Stadium, Athens

4.4
Reconstructed from the remains of an ancient stadium, Panathenaic Stadium serves as the only major sports venue in the world built entirely of white marble. The stadium, one of the oldest in the world, hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, and now serves mostly as a venue for live concerts and archery events. Originally built on this site in 566 BCE and renovated several times over the centuries, the hairpin-shaped stadium could once seat about 80,000 spectators. Today, the fifty rows of marble steps have the capacity to receive about half as many visitors. Take a morning jog on the ancient track, or take self-guided audio tour of the entire stadium. • One of the main historical sites of Athens, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympics in 1896. A beautiful structure, it is the only stadium in the world built entirely...  more »
  • Probably not worth the entrance fee. I was a bit pushed for time so decided against going inside. For pics of the stadium only you can get quite adequate shots just by standing near the entrance.  more »
  • A double interest in this visit because the two eras is there new. On the one hand, the reconstitution of the ancient Stadium founded by Lycurgus (330 AC) carries in the past and allows us to imagine sports and games taking place. On the other hand, we are also affected by the incredible momentum that it took Pierre de Coubertin, to rebuild this stage so that can take place the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. Dazzling white pentelic marble beautiful anyway, result. Well worth an hour of your time.

  • Historical place. First modern Olympics game was held here in 1896. The whole stadium is made of marble stone. You need to buy a ticket to enter into the stadium. Otherwise you can have great view of the stadium from the front side of it. And it's free of cost. Still I recommend to buy a ticket, enter into it and observe closely the history of modern Olympic.
  • If you are not that interested in sports, like me, don’t wast your time and money to go there. That’s a massive place honestly, but there nothing much to see. 5€ to walk there was not worth it. I recommend to sit back and enjoy the view of the stadium outside the “pay area”. There is a coffee shop and a souvenir market too. It is a good 25 minutes walk from Syntagma Square so think about it before taking this walk ;)
  • Stopped by on a hot afternoon after a tiring morning in Sounion and Acropolis, which were awe-inspiring. It was a memorable stop as the children got a chance to run on the tracks and pretend they were competing in a race. Luckily we had sports shoes on that day. The steps to the seats were amazingly high and I wondered how tall the Greeks were in those days. The stadium was rather small but compact but we could feel the excitement of those days gone by.
  • Must visit. Museum is small but great. I loved it. I was planning to drop it but I happy that I visited it. Audio guide makes it very interesting
  • It’s an unique cultural monument, vibrant and a Beautiful lovely place to visit when you are in Athens. It’s called the Panathenaic Stadium and for many centuries hosted games in which nude male athletes competed in track events. but make sure if you want to make some effort , climb a lot .And if it is sunny and very hot outside , go to the tunnel ,where you will find a little shop , and you’ll feel a lot better and fresh .
