  • If you read carefully the sign next to this prison you will see that the presentation of Socrates' prison is in quotation marks ("Socrates' prison"). Indeed, another prison of the same type was discovered a few years later on the other side of the city with remnants of containers containing scheed poison (the mixture used to execute prisoners). Faced with this discovery historians/archaeologists/government did not want to operate a backpedaling (oops guys you were told it was there but actually no ...). So it is not 100% sure that the place you are going to visit is the real prison of Socrates. All this was taught to us during our free guided tour which I highly recommend. There's one at 11 a.m. and one at 1:30 p.m. We have to wait in front of the bus stop cityseightseeing (red buses) of the Acropolis. It's a few feet from the prison. Our guide Dimitri was great, he made us think and pass places where he would never have stopped. These visits are provided by archaeologists such as Dimitri or students in history or archaeology. Plan change for the final tips.

  • Although historically it is a very attractive place to know, for some reason it does not appear on excursions and is not very signposted either. However, it is a nice one to take a photo or just be in the place, but there is nothing else to do, it is a lost place within the historic center. In summer bring water and sunscreen.

  • Not actually the place Socrates was imprisoned, just so you know, but still pretty cool. And there's shade.
  • The ‘Prison is Socrates’ is a not actually where Socrates was incarcerated. These rooms were carved into the marble around the 5th Century BC. It might be worth a look if you’re wandering by.
