Temple of Athena Nike, Athens

4.7
When touring the Acropolis, be sure to pay special attention to Temple of Athena Nike, the first Ionic temple in Athens' collection of architecture dedicated to their Pantheon. The walls and columns of the temple still stand in all their glory. Athenians once worshipped Nike, the goddess of victory, inside the colonnaded structure. Many of the statues and friezes that once graced the outside of the building can be found in the Acropolis Museum (moved to protect them from the elements). Access to this attraction is included in your ticket for the Acropolis. Use our Athens holiday planner to add Temple of Athena Nike and other attractions to your Athens vacation plans.

  • So this is part of the Acropolis complex. It is a small building but has a great view of city behind it if you get the right angle. If you visit the Acropolis, you won’t miss this as it’s along the ma...  more »
  • Just above the front entrance to the Acropolis hovered on the rock of a small classical temple of Niki-Athena. Nika, the goddess of Victory, as you know, is always depicted with wings. However, in this temple it was without wings - so the second name of the temple Niki Apteros (wingless). According to another version - it was the temple of Athena itself (and this one is definitely always without wings). In general, anyway, the statue is long gone, the building was rebuilt several times, and only in 2010 it seems to have been assembled in its original form. It looks more elegant than other buildings of the time, because there were specially broken classical proportions. You can only see from the outside and from afar.

  • This temple is just a small shrine on the right side of Propylaia when you enter the Acropolis. You cannot get too close, but there is something captivating in the small building seen with a distant hill as background. Brink water and a hat. Bought tix online. The feels r awesome, thousands of yrs of history... still standing!
  • This temple of Athena Nike was considered one of the most sacred on the hill having the sacred Olive tree.Legend has it that Zeus offered a contest between Athena and Poseidon for staking claim to Athens. Poseidon hit his trident on a hard rock of the Acropolis and created a water spring while Athena on the other hand produced an olive tree with her spear using her wisdom.Athenians who were the final judge of the competition proclaimed Athena the winner and thus Acropolis became the seat of Athena and the city "Athens" or "Athina" as is pronounced in Greek.
