Temple of Olympian Zeus, Athens

4.2
What remains standing today of Temple of Olympian Zeus serves as a testament to the grandeur of ancient Greek architecture. Built over several years and completed in 456 BCE, the temple was dedicated to Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods. Badly damaged by both fire and earthquakes, much of the temple is in ruins, but some columns still stand. At 10.5 m tall (34.4 ft) and 2.25 m (7.4 ft) in diameter, the columns were built of local limestone and covered in white stucco. Admission is included in the ticket to the nearby Acropolis. Put Temple of Olympian Zeus into our Athens day trip planning tool and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • It’s difficult to get an idea of the scale of the building and the structural members until one gets inside and walks around it. Glad we went in.  more »

  • So I could see this site really well from outside the fence and saved myself a good 24 euros. Absolutely no need to pay to see it. It’s really interesting looking, The site by itself is huge, reflecting how big and important the temple was, but only a few columns are left of it. Not much information provided, you don’t need a lot of time to see this site
  • A very beautiful place with an amazing view and a historical background, make sure to read about the place before going to enjoy it to the maw, if you can afford a guide your experience will be much much more interesting ! Take photos but also rest to contemplate the historical signs on the rocks ... If you're going in summer make sure to bring water and a hat with you i know it seems obvious but you'll be surprised how easy it is to forget. The bus or the metro or even the tram will leave you near the place, there's an entrance fee so be prepared for that,
