Fortress Spinalonga sits as a rocky islet floating in the blue waters of the Gulf of Elounda. The region's 16th century Venetian rulers carved this rock out of Crete's coastline and then built a fortress on it to protect the gulf from hostile ships. The old fortress, apparently as impregnable to the passage of time as it once was to would-be invaders, still dominates the islet and attracts nearly 30,000 annual visitors. Split your time on the little island between the Venetian fort and one of several beaches, which are lapped by shallow, calm waters. There are no tourist facilities here, so bring your own food and water. Fortress Spinalonga Reviews
Nous avons visité l iles une journée ensoleillée tres beau paysage bon je pense que c'est un peu l l'attrape touriste car il faut payer pour visité l l'iles en plus de la traversée. !!!!! 8e par perso... more »We visited the islands on a sunny day very beautiful good landscape I think it's a bit the tourist catch as you have to pay to visit the islands in addition to the crossing. !!!!! 8th per person
Het is er leuk om op jouw eigen tempo rond te slenteren en te zien hoe de mensen er toendertijd leefden. In de hoofdstraat kan je in enkele gebouwen de voorwerpen bekijken die men toendertijd gebruikt... more »It's nice to stroll around at your own pace and see how people lived there at the time. In the main street you can look at the objects used in some buildings that one used at the time. You can easily walk around the entire island.
A bit word, the atmosphere at this place, I guess because of its history, but it's worth a visit. The views are great here. During the day the sun was scorching, it was incredibly hot here. Better to visit earlier in the morning.
Leaving from Plaka in a small boat costing 10€ each we then paid another 8€ to actually get inside this old fort/leper colony. Apart from the views and the old artifacts there is nothing much to see for the 8€. Quite a lot of the old buildings are roped off for "construction" and it certainly isn't wheelchair/pram friendly. The gift shop cafe is also expensive 7€ for a bottle of beer.
