Museum of Prehistoric Thira, Fira

4.3
#1 of 97 in Museums in Cyclades
Featuring artifacts uncovered on the island, Museum of Prehistoric Thira represents Thira's prehistoric centuries with artifacts excavated from nearby Akrotiri and Potamos. Items are divided into four units representing: the history of research, Thira’s geology, the history of the island between the late Neolithic to late Cycladic Period I, and the city’s peak at Akrotiri. Examine pottery and marble figurines that are thousands of years old, and see the changes in pottery as Thira progressed through the centuries. The artifacts from Thira’s heyday paint a picture of how Therans lived in the 17th century BCE. • We spent a week going around the island, so I think it's a must to better understand the history of this magical place and the life of the ancient people. Beautiful remains, beautiful frescoes.

  • Nice museum with some interesting historical items and information. Might need to police the ticket buying and entry better as the ticket booth is to the side of the entrance and no one was at the museum entrance to receive our purchased tickets to which a few people who hadn’t paid just walked straight through... €6 isn’t a fortune, but at least everyone should pay or donate the same price for the museum upkeep and maintenance.
  • This is a well-managed museum. The collections are ordered chronologically. These include ceramics, sculptures, jewellery, wall paintings, and ritual objects. Perhaps their most famous display is the gold ibex figurine, which is unique of its kind. According to our guide, its significance is yet to be determined. I was most impressed by the well-preserved fresco and the pottery. As is the case in almost all museums, photography is not allowed. Definitely worth a quick visit when in Santorini.
