Heraklion Archaeological Museum
A vanished culture comes alive at Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which holds the remains of the 3,000-year-old Minoan civilization. The museum's famous collection of artifacts spans more than five millennia, from the Neolithic period to Roman times. The museum's twenty rooms display the most important and representative finds uncovered at several different excavation sites on Crete, including an enigmatic clay disc from the second millennium BCE. Its meaning and purpose have been disputed since its discovery in 1908; the disc remains one of archaeology's most famous unresolved mysteries. For a better understanding of the lost culture represented here, opt for a guided tour of the collection plus a visit to the archaeological sites near the city. Heraklion Archaeological Museum reviews

One of the finest archaeology museums I have ever seen. Beautiful artefacts, detailed explanations, great presentation. Well organized in times of Covid. The museum shop could have more catalogue... more »

Great organisation and not too enormous. Beautiful collection and well displayed! Loved the jewelery and cosmetic displays. Very interesting for even kids. more »

This was a surprisingly extensive collection of beautiful ceramics and other objects (but ceramics make the majority). Very interesting and informative. If you are interested in history, you’ll enjoy this museum. The ground floor alone took us almost 2 hours to go though. They also have a cloakroom, so you don’t have to carry your stuff around the whole time. I am not giving 5* because the second floor was closed when we visited and some of the text was impossible to read because some letters fell off, they should really fix it.

The most amazing museum I've ever been to. The amount of items and their almost "as new" state are unbelievable. The creativeness of ancient Greeks is mind blowing. Tickets are cheap enough and the case much worth supporting - these are only few of the many reasons to pay this wonderful place a visit.
