Monastery of the Great Meteoron, Kalambaka

4.8
#2 of 9 in Historic Sites in Kalambaka
The largest and oldest of the monasteries in Meteora, Monastery of the Great Meteoron gives insight into the former monastic way of life. The original, much smaller monastery was established about 1340 by monk St. Athanasios and was added on to St. Iosaph later. Visit the kitchen, which contains the original bread oven and soup hearth, both hundreds of years old. Look around the carpenter's workshop and cellar to get an idea of daily life for the monks who once lived here. Outside, you'll find the sacristy, where the skulls and bones of former inhabitants are gathered. • In the hotel we were recommended to go up first thing in the morning (to avoid the agglomerations) and walking along the path that there is once past the parking of the monastery Agios NiKolaos. There is room to park 2-3 cars. The climb is very bearable through the forest. It takes half an hour and it's not hard, it climbs cunningly. The trail is paved and has no loss. Too bad it's hardly used. As a reward for the effort, the monastery. Spectacular chapel, fantastic views and other curious surprises. Yes, women who do not wear a long dress or skirt, have to wear a skirt. Hormbres with bare shoulders must also be covered for access.

  • Bird nests equal to crackling monasteries on high rocks, well equipped and preserved, an attraction that is second to none.

  • An amazing place I cannot wait to visit again. Avoid buying things from the carts outside besides good and drink. They do not reflect the monastery itself which has a small gift shop so you can contribute to the monastery
  • This is a place u don't want to miss out on! Was there in September not that crowded and hot as in the high season.. the Sunset was amazing and calmness was great not many people.
