Willet-Holthuysen Museum, Amsterdam

4.4
Admire the opulence of the Dutch Golden Age, and stroll through one of Amsterdam's most luxurious historical residences at Willet-Holthuysen Museum. The house was originally built in the 17th century for the mayor of Amsterdam. After changing hands several times and undergoing a few modifications, Mrs. Willet-Holthuysen gave the house to the city, which converted it into a museum. A rich collection of artwork (much of it belonging to the previous owners of the house), is displayed throughout the rooms, which have been carefully preserved. After admiring the paintings, artifacts, furniture, and decor in the salons, ballroom, and private quarters, stop by the kitchen for a cup of tea or coffee. If the weather is nice, you can also visit the garden. The audio tour is free. Please check website for museum admission price and hours. • Well worth the admission, we enjoyed seeing the old tiles, furniture, kitchen stuff, and other implements of the old Dutch wealthy household. Worth climbing some stairs to see.  more »
  • The visit was very interesting. Wonderful, well-kept, interiors and the garden. It is highly recommended to visit, it is a different experience than in big museums.  more »

  • A fascinating glimpse into two art lovers from Amsterdams boom years. Louisa and her husband collected books, China, paintings and furniture, beautifully preserved in their Herengracht home. You not only gain insight into how the upper classes lived but also how their servants operated - the kitchen and rooms are nicely prepared. Artwork and furniture, especially in the ballroom are gorgeous. Their patronage of the arts have ensured that we've got amazing works to enjoy today and it's fitting that they left this house as a legacy to the city of Amsterdam. A must see for history lovers.
  • Very good hidden gem. My Dutch isn't very good, and the staff know english. Very informative and interesting. The audio tour was free and very interesting.
