Zuiderzeemuseum displays the history of the people who lived along the shore of the Zuiderzee before it transformed into the IJsellmeer. For centuries the Zuiderzee operated as a key shipping port. However, in 1932 the Afsluitdijk, or IJsellmeer Barrier Dam, closed off the saltwater inlet known as Zuiderzee, and turned it into the freshwater lake known as IJsellmeer. The open-air museum covers 6 hectares (15 acres) and presents a way of life that has since disappeared. Explore the small fishing village with authentic buildings from the region, including a church, fish-curing shed, mill, cheese warehouse, shops, and homes. Visit the indoor portion of the museum to see the largest collection of wooden ships in the country, as well as photography and traditional costumes. • We are no real museum goers in itself, but in good to reasonable weather this is really worth it! Nice that a lot of employees show up to your heart's content and tell HIE it was earlier. Very authentic, clean and provides. Also the free ferry to and from the museum was a nice surprise. Great day Out!

  • You go with n boat to Zuiderzee village where the time 100 years has stood still until the smallest details well maintained... By T nice weather everything looked beautiful... Because of the voluntary extras in their role, this old village came to life all the way... The freshly smoked fish in the old smokehouse is quite... The whole atmosphere... The smell in and around the cottages: it was as if I was visiting my grandmother again as a small child...

  • This place is amazing! It aims to recreate how Dutch people lived a hundred years ago and they really achieve it! Antique shops with real workers wearing the old apparel that was used before, real old houses, etc. It is definitely worthy! (Especially if the weather is nice)
  • Amazing! Lots of fun to wander around the outdoor village. You can easily spend a whole day here! Several hands-on activities are available for kids. Information is prewented in Dutch, English and German. Try the smoked salmon at the smokehouse and the pastries at the bakery. Highly recommended.
