World Heritage Kinderdijk, Kinderdijk

Almost everyone associates the Netherlands with windmills--at World Heritage Kinderdijk, you can see a channel lined with 19 of them dating back to 1740. Used for the last time during the World War II, these structures used hydraulics to provide drainage, protecting the area from floods. Although advanced technology is replacing windmills today, you can still admire the beauty of theses majestic structures. • The mill group is a UNESCO World Heritage Site-and it is entirely justified. Even though there are still several mills and smaller groups in the area, this plant is in my opinion the best way to see old Dutch windmills. Outside Rotterdam, situated on a small canal, you can admire several old mills here. Two mills can also be visited as a museum from the inside, but for an upscale EUR 9. Only the parking situation is catastrophic. Insb. When the buses come. That's why it better to appear early.

  • The visit to the Mills is one of the first activities that come to mind when visiting Holland. I had the desire to combine the typical Dutch landscape (windmills and canals) with the use of bicycles, two national typicality. The rental of bicycles in the shop at the entrance of the area has exorbitant costs (for each bike, 4 euros per hour + 25 euros deposit) and then we decided to take a walk. Perhaps, beyond the displeasure for not having made a pedal in the country of bicycles, the choice was the best: on the bike, the ride would have lasted 20 minutes and walking at least an hour goes away. I do not know if it depends on the exaggerated price of the rental, but the many people met were at 95% on foot (and those on the bike, many had their own...). The scenery is quaint and definitely worth a visit.
