Certosa di Pavia, Certosa di Pavia

One of Italy's largest monasteries, the gigantic Certosa di Pavia was built during the 14th and 15th centuries. Admire the church's intricate vaulted ceiling, collection of frescoes, and detailed Lombard-style facade. The Grand Cloister main inner courtyard measures more than 125 m (410 ft) long. • A seven minute train ride from Pavia, there is this monastery erected in the fifteenth century by a Duke of Milan, according to the will of his late wife. Out of time, out of the world, the monks open themselves the grids to access the choir, the courtyards and the gardens. The facade is extraordinary, each cm is carved, engraved, adorned, in the image of the Duomo of Milan. The Interior is not in rest, a multitude of treasures to discover. Fortunately, I was able to visit the ensemble almost without other tourists, which adds to the magic of the place.

  • We had never visited the Certosa, beautiful in a quiet park that really gives peace. The Certosa is maintained in an excellent way very interesting from an artistic point of view. The visit made by the Friars who live and work on site, very interesting. It is a place of prayer so I recommend clothing and silence while visiting

  • Well preserved and fascinating, though the tour did take me back to the idea of indulgences. The explanation in both English and Italian was very clear. The alfresco's beautifully preserved.
  • Amazing church and monastery, still inhabited by a few monks who offer free tours of the place, but only in italian. Every room and corner bears the signature of a great artist, indeed this is the first baroque monument built in Italy. Also the train station is very close buy, and the monks make promisingly scented tisanes and honey.
