The burial place of some of the most illustrious Italians, Basilica di Santa Croce holds the tombs of such luminaries as Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, and Rossini. The city's principal and the world's largest Franciscan church, the building was completed in 1385. The site's most notable features are its 16 chapels, many decorated with frescoes painted by Giotto and his pupils. The building's design reflects the austere approach favored by the Franciscans, with the floor plan following the figure of the Tau cross (the shape of the letter T), which was the symbol of St. Francis. The church's main cloister houses a simple, unadorned chapel designed by architect Filippo Brunelleschi. Choose from several guided tour options; advance reservations are required. General admission tickets can be purchased at the onsite ticket office, by phone, or online. Basilica di Santa Croce Reviews
La Basilica di Santa Croce oltre ad essere bellissima vista dall'esterna, ha al suo interno una serie di capolavori che meritano il biglietto che si paga per l'entrata. more »The Basilica of Santa Croce in addition to being beautiful view from the outside, has within it a series of masterpieces that deserve the ticket that you pay for the entrance.
Another one of the masterpieces to visit. Florence has so much to offer. We will definitely go back as there is just so much to se and do. more »
Love this square. Every time I've been during the day there's someone playing music, children playing around and there are benches right across it where you can sit and admire the basilica's beautiful facade. It is also very very pretty inside. There are tours offered or you can just go in at your own pace. Downside is you have to pay to see it as a tourist but at least once its worth it. Also, famous people were buried here like Michelangelo and Galileo Galilei and there's a monument to Dante Alighieri (though his body was never taken back to Florence).
We had been to Florence previously, but not to this part of the city. I believe that this basilica is the burial place of Michelangelo or Galileo, or both. Regardless, this is the district to go to for quality leather goods. Shop carefully - there are a number of shops that sell Italian leather, but not high quality. My wife got a quality Peruzzi purse at a fair price. I got 2 belts - not cheap, but very good quality. Look for solid, one-piece, not bonded (glued), with dye through the product. It won't be cheap, but it will last.
