Cappelle Medicee, Florence

4.5
An array of statues hewn by Michelangelo and his pupils adorn Cappelle Medicee, two ornate chapels built in honor of the Medici family and others who served as the Grand Dukes of Tuscany. Michelangelo's Sagrestia Nuevo contains the ornate marble tombs of Giuliano and Lorenzo de Medici. The walls of the octagonal Cappella dei Principi--a 17th-century collaboration between the Medicis and several architects--are infused with inlays of semi-precious stonework. The project's massive scope required the construction of a special stone workshop, the Opifio delle Pietre Dure. The chapels draw many visitors, so consider skipping the lines by buying tickets online. • The level of wealth and power really becomes apparent when one sees this Cappelle, taken with the Palace and the Uffizi. Amazing Frescoes and feeds into the shopping areas as well.  more »
  • Pro - Looking at the interior of this mausoleum you really understand the importance and power that the Medici family has held in Florence, Italy and Europe. Imposing and solemn! - Don't miss the visit to the new diva are the tombs of Lorenzo the Magnificent and his brother Giuliano. Cons - Expensive ticket. We visited the Chapel thanks to the Florence Card.

  • It was in my bucket list to stand under the famous octagonal dome of Medici chapel. If you are aware of how this dome was designed and the struggles, trials, time and the capital that was invested, you will appreciate the authentic experience. The security check and ticket purchase was quite a simple and easy process. Keep in mind that there are steps within the Chapel. Strollers and/or wheel chair would be a bit of an issue unless you are willing to carry it up the steps.
  • The chapel is worth visiting, even more so than the San Lorenzo church, which is located near. The sheer beauty of the interior is breath taking and the whole history of the Medici familiar converges inside this space of a few hundred square metres. It's a beautiful part of Tuscany's history that must not be missed!
