Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, Milan

4.9
A hidden gem of the city, Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is a fully frescoed Renaissance church noted for paintings by Bernardino Luini, an artist who worked closely with Leonardo da Vinci and became known for his graceful female figures with elongated eyes. The church was originally attached to the city’s most important female convent of the Benedictines, which now serves as an archaeological museum. These adjoining buildings were erected on pre-existing Roman foundations, with some of the ancient elements incorporated into the new structures. Construction began in 1503, with the complex divided into one section for the faithful, and one for the nuns. For nearly three centuries the nuns were forbidden to cross the dividing wall. Today, the complex is open daily for both worshippers and art enthusiasts. • Very beautiful church, divided into two parts (one for civilians, and another for religious). The walls are covered with multiple paintings, very colorful. I particularly enjoyed the scenes of the flood. Free admission. A donation is appreciated for maintenance.

  • Passing in the street you do not notice but crossing the entrance you are in a treasure chest of beauty and art. Beautiful the part reserved to the nuns of seclusion, wonderful wooden benches and beautiful frescoes to cheer the enclosure with beautiful depicacies of enchanting landscapes. It is impossible not to visit it and not to be shocked.

  • All the churches welcome visitors with warm heart, including the iconic ones such as Milan cathedral. This one is the only exception. All the visitors were pushed out by a female staff. Not sure what she was saying, but didn't sound polite at all. Wasn't service time in case you are wondering.
  • Nice church with a special layout. There is also a copy of Secret Dinner of Da Vinci
