Sistine Chapel, Vatican City

4.3
#2 of 8 in Museums in Vatican City
One of the world's greatest artistic treasures, Sistine Chapel was originally called Capella Magna. The site takes its current name from Pope Sixtus IV, who restored the chapel between 1477 and 1480. The structure has long served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. It's the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. The chapel's fame comes mainly from the frescoes decorating its interior. The ceiling, painted by Michelangelo between 1508 and 1512, is the most notable feature and a cornerstone work of High Renaissance art. The ceiling's various elements form part of a larger decoration. The huge fresco entitled "The Last Judgment" is one of Michelangelo's greatest works. Botticelli, Ghirlandaio, and Raphael also contributed to the chapel's impressive interior. Skip the extremely long entry lines by booking a guided tour with the Vatican Museums ahead of time. • Crowded, like sardines in a can, but must see. It’s fascinating to listen to the headphones and the Michelangelo story and how he did what he did. Pictures not allowed wink wink, just don’t be obvious...  more »

  • I had a great afternoon walking round looking at the amazing history and surroundings views. You would need to have a gilded tour or you would miss so much and not understand what you are looking at. A must for any person but be warned there us a great deal of walking round and round with plenty of stairs to climb.
  • The Sistine Chapel at Vatican city was amazing with so much rich history and beauty, it makes you wonder about all the stuff we don't see on display. With it being one of the oldest religions you have to wonder what historical items they may have in their vaults. It is this kind.of thing that makes places like this great to visit and study when you have time and the means.
