Vatican Necropolis, commonly referred to as the Scavi, lies under Vatican City, some 5 to 12 m (16 to 39 ft) below Saint Peter’s Basilica. The tombs and mausoleums, early depictions of Christ, and St. Peter’s grave impress visitors greatly. Properly excavated during the 1940s, today visitors in small groups of 10 to 15 people can experience a pre-arranged guided tour. Check out the official website to make a reservation, required to visit this attraction.
