Verona's Cathedral (Duomo), Verona

4.3
Consecrated in 1187, Romanesque cathedral Verona's Cathedral (Duomo) features 14th-century frescoes and a projecting porch that is supported by two griffons and decorated with 12th-century sculptures by Nicholaus. The Gothic windows are part of 14th-century renovations, while the Baroque designs at the top of the facade came along in the 18th century. The cavernous apse dates to the mid-12th-century. Stick around to hear the church bells, still rung in the Vernonese tradition. The cathedral is included on the multiple-monuments pass the city offers. • A beautiful interior with so much to see. The information on the audio guide is too much and mostly irrelevant if you can find the place where to listen.  more »
  • The Cathedral of Verona is dedicated to Mary Mother of God, or Santa Maria Matricolare. It rises in the bend of the Adige, not far from the river. You have to start the visit from the outside, to visit carefully because it is rich of interesting architectural details. On the left, a passage leads to the cloister of the oldest church of Sant'Elena, under which you can see Paleochristian mosaics. The entrance inside the Duomo and the complex of the other 2 churches connected to it, Sant'Elena precisely and San Giovanni in Fonte (see specific reviews) is paid, you enter from a little door located behind the apse. You can also buy a cumulative ticket for 4 ecclesiastical complexes: that of the Duomo, in fact, then the nearby Saint Anastasia, then that of San Fermo and finally San Zeno Maggiore. The visit to the 4 complexes can be done in installments, on different days, the cumulative ticket lasts 1 year...

  • Verona is my favourite city in Italy. It is not too big to walk around and not too small. Some places are very, very nice and one of them Verona Cathedral. Must see if you are in city.
  • Interesting and very light modern cathedral. Although you can gain entrance to complex at 10am be wRned that the duomo does not open until 11am so you may have to wait about as we did. English translation audio guide included which was useful and informative.
