Enjoy pristine nature at Khovsgol Nuur, one of the clearest lakes in the world and the largest lake in Mongolia. Known as the "Dark Blue Pearl of Mongolia," this ancient 125 km (78 mi) long lake stands at the foot of the Sayan Mountains, close to the Russian border. Surrounded by the Khoridol Saridag mountains rising to 3,093 m (10,148 ft), the lake serves as a transition zone between steppe and taiga landscape. You can rent fishing gear and try to catch some perch, burbot, lenok, salmon and sturgeon. The endangered and endemic Havsgol grayling also inhabits the lake. If you don't want to go fishing yourself, you can buy fish from local markets and have a barbecue.     the lake itself is very clean and big. since that is protected area, the water quality and near around also very nice. i see some person do a big boat visit some to do kayaking. all they enjoy of it.....  more »

    Stayed at a Gur camp on the edge of the lake. We were in high season for local tourists and there were many folk around but easy to trek away from crowds.  more »
