#8 of 28 in Parks in Mongolia
Water Body · Hidden Gem · Nature / Park
Enjoy pristine nature at Khovsgol Nuur, one of the clearest lakes in the world and the largest lake in Mongolia. Known as the "Dark Blue Pearl of Mongolia," this ancient 125 km (78 mi) long lake stands at the foot of the Sayan Mountains, close to the Russian border. Surrounded by the Khoridol Saridag mountains rising to 3,093 m (10,148 ft), the lake serves as a transition zone between steppe and taiga landscape. You can rent fishing gear and try to catch some perch, burbot, lenok, salmon and sturgeon. The endangered and endemic Havsgol grayling also inhabits the lake. If you don't want to go fishing yourself, you can buy fish from local markets and have a barbecue. Take a boat trip to Cormorant Island, enjoying the clarity of the water and the wildlife that thrives in it. To visit Khovsgol Nuur on your trip to Khatgal, use our Khatgal trip planner.
