A World Heritage Site, Belém Tower played an important role in Portuguese exploration during the Age of Discoveries. View the native beige-white limestone used in this Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style. King John II commissioned a defense system to be built at the end of the 15th century. The tower was not built until later, under King Manuel I, and was finally completed in 1519. Though the tower has seen many changes and additions to its original structure, it is still most famous for its beautiful 15th century architecture. As you explore, you'll discover the historical value of this site, which served as a defense at the mouth of the Tagus river and as a prison to many over several centuries. With our custom trip planner, Lisbon attractions like Belém Tower can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Belém Tower Reviews
très beau mais trop d'heures d'attente pour rentrer dans le monument, il faut refaire la queue pour acheter le billet d'entrée more »very beautiful but too many hours of waiting to enter the monument, you have to redo the queue to buy the entrance ticket

I absolutely loved this tower ... it makes for an excellent photo opportunity. The beauty of me coming to this place on Monday was that it was closed. For taking outside photographs that was perfect. To get here via tram or bus, do not get off at the Belem stop, but the next stop. It will get you much closer when walking to it.
Built between 1514 and 1520 as part of a defence system, the Tower of Belém is an architectural jewel from the reign of Manuel I. Actually seeing the building in person, you can see why it is considered to be such. With the Lisboa Card you get free access to the Belem Tower. If you are wanting to tour the actual tour I would recommend arrive around opening time. The tower is a bit further from any tree lines so you are in direct sun, for at least an hour queue depending on when you arrive.
